About Elissa Barber
Elissa Barber is a graduate of Sheridan Institutes Bachelor of Applied Art (Interpretive Illustration) program (2011). During her time at Sheridan she was one of three students to be provided her own studio space which further nurtured her love of independent exploration. She was awarded the Rudy Klemann Award of Excellence and Shaw Media Best in Show distinctions amongst her graduation cohort.
Barber explores the possibilities of the gestural line and its ability to articulate the physical form, evoke emotion and depth with limited information. Simple, elegant linework applied to feminine archetypes and symbols as subject matter is both a direct reflection of her own personal visual vocabulary and an attempt to relate to a more universal shared female experience. Barber’s work explores themes of beauty and modern femininity, questioning how our eyes perceive beauty. She often calls on works of Historical fiction as narrative reference in her subtle, often deeply personal visual storytelling.
